A big 'thank you' to all who participated in our survey at Learning and Skills 2011 at Olympia or completed our online version.
Those of you who attended the exhibition will have seen our very sophisticated survey mechanism – we asked you to put a blue or orange (customised!) M&M® into the jar representing the L&D activity you expected to do more or less of in 2011.
Blue was for more of and orange for less of. The rules seemed simple to us ... Some people put several blues into one jar (e-learning specifically!), some people put several blues and no oranges into jars (we concluded that this was because L&D people are so positive!) and somebody ate an M&M®! Oh and then there was the red one....
| Subject Subject | MORE OF | LESS OF |
| e-learning and mobile learning e-learning and mobile learning | 87% | 13% |
| 2-3 days classroom based courses | 27% | 73% |
| Informal learning | 78% | 22% |
| Management Development Programmes | 73% | 27% |
| Coaching & Mentoring | 77% | 23% |
| Bite size sessions | 78% | 22% |
What was interesting were the conversations we had with people whilst they were deliberating over where to put their M&Ms®. We expected e-learning to be a big 'more of' - the main draw was the Learning Technologies exhibition after all. This would also have an impact on mobile and informal learning as well. The pleasant surprise was how many of you expect to do more management development programmes, in conversations these were often blended programmes with a range of delivery methods involved.
Coaching and mentoring is on the increase too and there was a lot of interest in our coaching and mentoring qualifications aimed squarely at the 'in-house' coach and mentor. Click here for more information
Also of interest is the number of people saying they (and/or their organisations) would be hoping to do more e-learning/mobile learning as it is so economically attractive. However, they were struggling to engage employees in their online offerings.
We sometimes wonder if we confuse learning with knowledge acquisition? Many people tell us that skills development happens best in a facilitated group learning situation and a recent USA survey backs this up – ‘Sixty-five percent of learning executives indicated they continue to use classroom training as the primary learning delivery method for developing soft skills, according to an analysis of survey data from the Chief Learning Officer Business Intelligence Board (BIB) featured in the magazine’s February special report on learning delivery.’ Full results can be found here - http://www.clomedia.com/articles/view/4078#
If we want to learn how to do something we have to try doing it, ideally under the watchful eye of someone who can give us good quality feedback, tips and techniques and in an environment where we can share the experience with other learners. We can read hundreds of books on Assertiveness, however, the chance to practise those skills in a 'safe' environment is more likely to give us the confidence to try those skills in real life and more importantly, get the outcomes we need and want.
So, whilst the 2-3 day classroom based course came out as a 'less of' - we still think there is a strong place for facilitated group learning as part of the mix. We believe the mix is the key, we need to offer something for everyone - ideally in a fairly co-ordinated, trackable way. We visited a stand that enables organisations to provide a range of support from enabling course bookings to tracking CPD, from helping you to book a coaching session to offering relevant podcasts - The Working Manager - www.theworkingmanager.com Our support for your management development programmes can include providing all the elements of a blended programme with the added benefit of a recognised qualification from the Chartered Management Institute.
