Our Management Poems...

What can I say?

Walking on eggshells all day long

Fearing I might say something wrong

Work is such a minefield today

I’m fearful of what I can and cannot say

Can I tell someone they shouldn’t text?

Or it’s not OK to spend hours on the net?

Is it alright to question why they’re late?

Or will a tribunal be my fate?

Can I ask why they have been off sick?

Or am I at risk if it is you that I pick?

Will there be a challenge on equal opportunity?

Will it be off to the tribunal for me?

It seems no matter what I do,

One thing is certainly true

They are not always doing their job

And with excuses it’s me that they fob

‘You haven’t trained me or told me what to do’

Doesn’t matter that they said they already knew

Seems the cards are stacked against me

And that in the tribunal I will be made to see

Ah, but there is a chink of light

Seems I am within my rights

The questions I ask are perfectly fair

And so I do not need to beware

I can indeed manage my team

Common sense has prevailed it seems!

Learning Styles

Honey and Mumford’s learning styles

Have been around for quite a while

They’re just as relevant in 2009

As they have been in past times

Despite challenges from others in the field

To their views I will not yield

Time and time again I find

That delegates ‘get it’ in their mind

It helps them to understand

How they can deliver first hand

Information and knowledge that will stay

Because they have adapted to the ‘best’ way

Activist, Pragmatist, Theorist or Reflector

Learning Styles helps us to learn better!

A Manager’s Job

There are just some days

When a manager’s job is tough

When you try every which way

But the hours just aren’t enough

Talk about balancing balls

And keeping plates spinning

Every day I’m giving it my all

But I don’t feel like I’m winning

Delegate more is what I’m told

And – ‘you need to manage your time’

How I wish I could be so bold

As to tell my boss where to stick that line!

If I had more resources I’d be OK

But instead they don’t fill the gaps

And what’s more – they cut the pay!

Is it any wonder there are mishaps?

‘Why can’t you motivate your team?’

Is what I’m being asked

‘Because we are cut too lean

And there’s not enough for the task’

2009 has been one heck of a year

It’s challenged every one of us

But 2010 is looming near

And I’m beginning to feel a buzz

If I play my cards right

And look after my team

Success could just be in sight -

Things may be as good as they seem

As we move forward into 2010

I will remember those who tried

Who put every effort in

To ensure that we survived!

EQ

No I don’t mean ET

I mean a more emotional me

It seems if I am more aware

Of the feelings that are there

A better manager I can be

By operating emotionally intelligently

At first I thought it was a laugh

And judging by their smiles? so did my staff

Then I went on an EQ session

And now I must make a confession

Having studied the Mayer Salovey model

And realising it won’t always be a doddle

By getting in touch will others and myself

And reading the EQ books on my shelf

I have found that it actually works

And the smiles? are no longer smirks!
